As Australian transport planning has increasingly adopted an intermodal framework, Meyrick and Associates has become increasingly involved in the rail sector. The projects we carry out call on our skills in research and analysis, combined with our knowledge of the commercial, policy and regulatory environment of the transport industry.

Assisting parties with developing and responding to access regimes has been an important part of this development. As well as undertaking a comparative analysis of the various access regimes, we have provided specific advice to interested parties on aspects of rail access regimes in all mainland states. As part of our broader analyses of impediments to supply chain efficiency, we have also become very familiar the implications of technical and safety regulation of rail.

Apart from dealing with regulatory issues, our work in the rail sector includes forecasting of future rail volumes, the analysis of intermodal terminals, assessment of the financial and economic consequences of modal shift, and the development of strategies for encouraging greater use of rail for port-related traffic. And of course an analysis of the current and future role of rail is a crucial part of work on cross-modal studies such as Twice the Task and the AusLink corridor studies.
