Meyrick in the Intermodal Terminals Sector
20 Aug 2007

The movement of freight by a variety of modes is an everyday occurrence. However, for many reasons intermodal transport and intermodal terminals have developed ahead of governments capacities to develop policies and strategies to guide them. Meyrick and Associates has been involved in numerous studies to gather and interpret information about intermodalism and intermodal terminals and to undertake studies to assist clients to develop intermodal terminals.

The Great Freight Task, the report of the 2006 House of Representatives Standing Committee on Transport and Regional Services (The Neville Committee), makes extensive reference to two Meyrick projects that have made important contributions to research in the intermodal terminals sector: the National Intermodal Terminal Study; and Twice the Task.

Meyrick assists work in the IMT sector through:

  • Policy development: We have worked with national, state and local governments to assist in the development of intermodal terminal policies where none exist.
  • IMT information gathering: We have developed a national database of regional and metropolitan intermodal terminals to assist government and industry to make informed choices about the role and benefits of individual intermodal terminals under the AusLink framework.
  • IMT Operational Costing Tools: We have developed in-house models to allow us to estimate operating costs of terminals under different throughput and layout and applied these for clients.
  • Feasibility assessment: We have worked with governments and developers in assessing the feasibility of developing intermodal terminals, especially in the regions. We have developed a generic model for the construction and operation of intermodal terminals.
  • Governance advice: We have assisted in a range of greenfield and brownfield developments and have experience in a variety of governance strategies for IMTs. Promoting governance arrangements for the optimal operation of the facility enables the best design principles to meld with the expected outcomes of all parties.
